Maelstrom G5 [FS.G5]

$149.95

After nearly a year of research and development, the first of the Maelstrom series is ready to storm the market!

The Maelstrom G5 follows 4Seven's design philosophy of "function over form." From the start, the G5 was conceived with these basic goals:

  • One-inch weapon mountable body
  • Most advanced LEDs and optics
  • Brightest, farthest-projecting solution in a compact, rugged package.
  • Highly efficient, top-binned CREE XP-G emitter
  • Fine-tuned deep, smooth reflector
Note:: The G5 reflector is removable, but it is very delicate. Never touch anything to the inside of the reflector, as it will permanently mar the polished surface.
  • Useful range of over 100 meters
  • Waterproof to IPX-8 standard: 1 meter, 30 minutes

Features

  • Seven versatile modes of output are easily accessible by simply rotating the head. A completely silent 4-point switch allows selecting through the modes without detection, ideal for tactical situations. The seven modes are split into two sets. The most commonly used modes of output are placed as the first two positions (tight and immediately loosened) for both sets of modes: High/Strobe, and High/Medium.
  • Generous knurling throughout the surface of the entire light ensures confident grip even in the messiest of situations.
  • Removable grip ring, clip, and crenated stainless steel strike bezel. A flat-black aluminum bezel and grip ring replacement are included.
  • Shock-mounted battery design holds the batteries firmly inside to the body of the light, avoiding self-destructive battery movement. The light is ready to be weapon mounted.
  • Patent-pending anti-rattle design that accomodates both 2xCR123A and 1x18650 without the need of spacers or adapters.
  • Custom molded holster shaped for the G5 is included. This holster is designed to help retain the light even when flap is open.
  • A tactical, momentary 'clicky' switch is fully exposed in the tailcap for easy access, even when wearing gloves.

Operation

The G5 features a unique 4-point switch engagement in the head of the flashlight that lets you select the different outputs smoothly and silently by simply loosening or tightening the head. Every quarter-turn (approximately 90 degrees) of the head selects a different output. As you loosen or tighten the head, you change modes as follows (in order of Loosened to Tightened): Off, Auxiliary 2, Auxiliary 1, Secondary, Primary.

The G5's 7 total modes of output are split into 2 sets, Regular and Special. The following are the modes in order from Auxiliary 2 to Primary (Loosened to Tightened):

  • Regular: Moonlight, Low, Medium, High
  • Special: Beacon, S.O.S., Strobe, High

As you can see, switching between the modes in a set is very simple - you just tighten or loosen the head to get to your desired mode.

Switching between sets is also simple. Fully tighten the head of the flashlight so that you are in the Primary mode. Then, quickly loosen and tighten the head (switching between Secondary and Primary) 4 times to change to the alternative set of modes.

I have had the maelstrom g5 for awhile now and find it one of my favorite lights. It is a thrower and in that class is the best I have. In comparison with a trust fire 1200 lumen flashlight (claimed) it throws better but has less overall light. I like the head-turn system for selecting brightness levels quite well. It is easy though not precise, meaning you can easily get the wrong brightness or fail to get a brightness level without a little fiddling. Still, I prefer it to systems where you click multiple times to get different brightnesses. Getting to the other mode--such as a series with strobe and sos in it--is a bit of a hassle so I just leave it in the mode with four brightness levels. Build quality is great--considerably better than trust fire--and 18650 or 123 batteries don't rattle about in it. A very nice light if you want throw.

I wanted to provide a quick review of the Maelstrom G5, R5 Edition which I recently purchased. I am a law enforcement officer in southern California and I purchased this light to replace my Pelican 8060 duty light. My needs were very specific...I needed a light that was light weight (due to all the gear I carry), and one that had a lot of throw. I light needed to cut through window tint of vehicles as I approached, and light up dark alleys or driveways in a tactical situation. I love this light, it's perfect. The throw is amazing, and for tactical situations it had proven to be exactly what I need for patrol use. If anyone reading these reviews is considering the Maelstrom for use in a law enforcement capacity, I highly encourage you to order this light. I also ordered the Quark Turbo 1232 R5 to go along with this, and now I carry both of these lights exclusively. The combination of these two lights replaced my Surefire 6P, Pelican 8060, and Fenix PD20. Thank you 4Sevens for a great product at a great price, that really delivers!

These guys from 4 Sevens know their stuff. I just received a Maelstrom light I just ordered and talk about quick service. These guys are great! I have bought lights from them in the past, they never disappoint me.
The Maelstrom is another great flashlight. In fact I don't even think flashlight is a good enough category for this light. Maybe a lifelight. It certainly is tough enough that I predict I will have it the rest of my life. The detail and ingenuity in this light is amazing. It is a little bigger and heavier than I thought it would be, but still to do what it does, I can overlook the slightly bigger size and extra ounces than my other lights have. I can foresee this light being excellent in a bugout bag. Thanks to all at 4Sevens for the quality lifelights they continue to produce.

I bought two of these - one for my dad and one for me.

This light throws very well on high with decent spacing between the modes. The moonlight is nice to have for inside the house (Note that is is a brighter moonlight than my Quark 123^2 S2.

Likes:
It uses both 123's or an 18650 (I prefer rechargeable 18650s).

The orange peel reflector I ordered as an extra increases usability by keeping throw while increasing flood.

The R5 emitter gives a nice white light (note that S2 emitters may have green tint or white and its still luck of the draw while most, if not all, R5's are white).

A little out-of-the-box customization possible with a flat grip-ring spacer or the regular grip ring and two choices of bezel.

The tactical strobe/S.O.S/beacon are grouped separately and are easy to access once you learn the UI.

Dislikes: The quarter turn twist can be touchy between modes. I can handle that.

Purchased December 2010

This is by far the best flashlight i have ever owned I cant believe I have been missing out on 4Sevens products this long.

The light really is as advertised and it works out to 100 or more yards I was also very impressed with all the accessories they ship with it I feel like you get way more for you money than you do with some of the competitors that feel their name might be enough to justify their high prices. Thanks for making a great product, I am trying to get all my friends to buy these as well

I purchased this unit for my side-side Stoeger shotgun. Excellent quality and durability for the price. The max setting is blinding up close, and great distance beam. A great handheld lamp too.

Thumbs up.
David.

This is officially my favorite 4sevens light of all time. And the r5 version is discounted right now for a heck of a deal. I bought both the s2 and r5 version. For seven percent increase that I can bearly see. The R5 is the way to go and save. Get them while you can.

Bought the orange peel reflector for my maelstrom. It still has the through distance but adds a flood effect. I like it better for general use. and will stick with it on my light.

I saw this light on sale, and the fact it uses either 2 cr123 or the 2900mah 18650 litiuium recharageable batteries, I new they had built in flexibility. 350 out the front vs 230 otf lumens on the turbo 123 was a huge jump using the same R5 led. I got it with the new springloaded charger and i will now only use the recharagable batteries. Told by EE guys there they would recharge 1000's of times. The four quarter turns goes through the max, high, low, moon setting. then to twist from max to high rapidily several times until strobe stars is no hassell at all. The Sos and the 4th setting is beacon. Even though designed to be a tactical mounted light. it just feels like a hand held light should feel. I wish my Dad was still alive. This is the one I would buy him. When I think of the crummy lights he put up with all those years it just breaks my heart. Just to let you know as long as 4 sevens has the r5 maelstrom G5 in stock, the price difference is so good , it is a heck of a deal over the new S2 led that just gives you 25 more otf. Now is the time to stock up on the G5 while they still have them.

Glad I had the Maelstrom G5 with me a couple of weeks ago. We went rubber boat camping in the Smoky Mountains and got a late start. Got up Lake Fontana about 8 miles and we were looking for the Island we camp on. Dark, very dark, pitch dark, even the mountain and island profiles were gone and we were facing East, not the moon, nothing.
There was no chance of blowing out the night vision (finally there was non left) I was able to try out the full output of 350 lumens when it was really needed. (Instead of shining the neighbors houses Found out I did a pretty good job of navigating because in a matter of minutes I found the landmark I was looking thanks to the lumens and throw of the Maelstrom.

I own over 30 LED flashlights, plus several halogen models (Surfire M6 & M2). For a light of this size, I've never seen anything brighter. The reflector is perfect, throwing a bright central beam with some lateral spill. The fit and finish of this light is very well done and it comes with a lanyard and fitted nylon belt pouch. Bravo 4sevens!

I am an avid cpf'er and always looking to improve my arsenal of lights. The G5 is a tactical flashlight, if you want an EDC I recommend going with a Quark AAx2 regular or Fenix LD20; I constantly strive and search for ingenuity and well executed designs...the G5 fits this perfectly. I started with surefire, then fenix, then malkoff modded surefires, and then found the quark line. As of late, I have been using a Quark 123x2 Turbo with primaries and a malkoff MD4 w/ M61 powered by 2 AW 18650s, but when I saw the G5 I had to test it out. The reason I love it is it meets the criteria for a one-stage tactical flashlight...one push of a button and you get one mode only. Yes, there is a little programming involved, but it only took a few minutes of reading the brochure and a little fiddling with to comprehend. If you need this for a tactical reason, once programmed, you might as well "set it and forget it"; what I like, is you can silently and easily (by turning the head just a 1/4 turn) switch to a secondary one-stage output; I have mine set to Max/Strobe. I carry, use and rely on my G5 every night at work...what will you roll with?

I own many different lights from several manafacturers. The Maelstrom G5 is a true pleasure to own. It has a VERY tight spot with a nice spill to light up the dark close and far. With the XP-G state of the art emmitter and versatile battery options, this is a very nice lighting tool. The operation of the light is very easy to learn. The materials are well designed. The Maelstom G5 is a winner in my book hands down. Great product 4sevens!

Due to the reflector design even the medium setting of 28 lumens is adequate for hiking on good trails at night - something quite surprising since with other lights 80 lumens is about the minimum required for walking along relatively open trails at night. The high setting of 200 lumens projects usable light quite a great distance. The max setting of 350 lumens would be more than needed for most uses.
